    5-Day Scientific Writing Workshop for Young Researchers from Central Asia – focus: Water Resources Management

    The OSCE Office in Tajikistan in cooperation with the German Kazakh University (GKU) in Kazakhstan will organise a 5-days scientific writing course with a focus on water resources management issues for the most talented researchers and academics from Central Asia and Afghanistan. The training course will take place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 3-7 October 2016. OSCE will cover the travel costs and will provide a per diem for the course participants while GKU disseminate the Call and participate in their selection for the workshop.

    Policy Stakeholders Conference on ‘EU-Central Asia STI Cooperation in addressing Health’ – presentations now online

    This Policy Stakeholders Conference (PSC) organised by the IncoNet CA project addressed 'Health' as one of the societal challenges that are of mutual importance to Europe and Central Asia. Earlier PSCs had tackled 'Climate Change' and 'Energy' issues. The aim of the latest conference was to take stock and showcase best practices regarding EU-CA scientific cooperation, discuss concrete innovation cooperation projects, and promote international collaboration, networking, matchmaking. The event also provided an opportunity to present projects from the region as well as best practice examples. Presentations and photos are now available.

    Call for Applications: Scholarships for Doctoral Students from the Caucasus and Central Asia

    CIFE and the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) start the PhD Support Programme 'The EU, Central Asia and the Caucasus in the International System' (EUCACIS). Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and the Erasmus+ programme, the EUCACIS PhD Support Programme offers scholarships of 300 Euro per month for three years and a travel grant of up to 500 Euro for field research to excellent postgraduates who are working on a doctoral thesis in political science, contemporary history or economics on a topic related to the programme’s thematic focus at a university or academy of sciences in the Southern Caucasus or the wider Central Asia.

    CEPF Call for Proposals: 'Mountains of Central Asia Biodiversity Hotspot'

    The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) is a joint programme of l'Agence Française de Développement, Conservation International (CI), the European Union, the Global Environment Facility, the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation, and the World Bank. Now CEPF is soliciting proposals from highly qualified organisations or teams to prepare the Ecosystem Profile for the Mountains of Central Asia Biodiversity Hotspot. CEPF will make one award of $300,000 for a team to lead a stakeholder consultation process in the region and produce multiple written deliverables.

    Central Asia (including the Central Asian regions of Russia) is among the targeted partner regions of this funding measure within the Framework Programme 'Research for Sustainable Development (FONA3)' of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The aim of funding under the 'CLIENT II' programme is to support international partnerships in the areas of climate, environment and energy. BMBF will support German companies, research and other institutions; the foreign project partners must contribute their own financing for their project module or source the necessary funding in their country of origin.

    The experts' visit took place in Tashkent on 19-20 June 2015 in the frame of the  IncoNet CA project. On 19 June the experts visited the Physical-Technical Institute SPA 'Physics Sun' of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences. SPA 'Physics-Sun' is a leading organisation for conducting basic and applied research in the field of solar energy. The Test Bed (Geliopoligon) of the Physical-Technical Institute of SPA 'Physics-Sun' is the main base of the testing site, where scientific-research, and pilot development works are being performed.

    Participation of EaP and CA researchers in the SET-Plan Conference and official visit to the ENEA Research Centre

    The IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA projects promote international STI cooperation and research policy dialogue between the EU and its member states on the one hand, and the Eastern Partnership and Central Asia Countries on ther other. One of the projects' tasks is to collaborate with EU Innovation Platforms. In this context the Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) organised the participation of innovative EaP and CA energy researchers in the 2014 SET Plan Conference. The event was held in Rome on 10-11 December under the auspices of the Italian Presidency of the European Union.

    The Indo-Uzbek Center for Promotion of Science and Technology Cooperation held a workshop about the Enterprise Europe Network on 28 October at the Miran International Hotel in Tashkent. Representatives of the European Union, young scientists from research institutes and experts of SMEs from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, participated in the event. The aim of the Workshop was to reflect successful examples of cooperation of Central Asian (CA) countries with the Enterprise Europe Network and to propose ways to extend the network in CA countries.

    Renewable Energy Resources in Uzbekistan

    On 7 Feburary 2014 the World Bank (WB) and the Uzbek government signed two agreements totaling $52.7 million for projects in the agricultural sector, reported RIA Novosti with reference to a WB representative in Uzbekistan. Included in this is a U$12.699 million grant for Uzbekistan for the development of agriculture and to mitigate the consequences of climate change. The grant has been allocated from the Global Environment Fund. The funds will be spent on the construction of 50 biogas plants, 14 solar mini-installations, as well as five pumping stations, working on renewable energy farms in eight regions of the country.

    National Energy Globe Award Uzbekistan 2013 goes to Uzbek-German sustainability project

    The project "Economic and Ecological Restructuring of Land- and Water Use in the Region Khorezm (Uzbekistan)” has won the National Energy Globe Award Uzbekistan 2013. The Energy Globe Award is one of the world's largest platforms for sustainability. Over 100 countries sent a total of 1,051 entries for the competition.

    International Institute of Solar Energy is opening in Tashkent

    On February 16 the the first Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Uzbekistan, Rustam Azimov, and the president of the Asian Bank for Development, Harukiko Kuroda, signed a Memorandum on the creationof a new Research Centre for Solar Energy, which will allow Uzbekistan to become a hub of international knowledge and an expert in solar technplogies in the future.

    Center for Development Research publishes guidelines ‘Follow the Innovation: Participatory Testing and Adaptation of Agricultural Innovations in Uzbekistan’

    The Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn recently published the document ‘Follow the Innovation: Participatory Testing and Adaptation of Agricultural Innovations in Uzbekistan’. With these guidelines, ZEF wants to share its experience with a participatory research approach to the development and implementation of innovations, which was gathered within the interdisciplinary project “Economic and ecological restructuring of land and water in the region Khorezm (Uzbekistan)”. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and implemented in collaboration with local partners.

    A previously unknown minor planet with a four-year rotation period around the Sun was discovered by Uzbek astronomers in 2007 and officially included in the International Minor Planet Catalog under the number 210271. The planet has been given the name Samarkand.

    New observatory opened in Andijan

    New observatory opened at the Babur park in the city of Andijan. It was created by the Astronomy Institute of the Uzbekistan Science Academy in cooperation with the International Babur Foundation and Andijan State University. Here, all conditions have been created for observing celestial bodies with high accuracy thanks to powerful telescopes and other equipment. These devices will help students of mathematics and astronomy faculties of universities in Ferghana, Andijan and Namangan regions, as well as young people who are interested in astronomy.

    International Association of Academies of Sciences is the international non-governmental organization created in 1993 in Kiev by representatives of the national academies of sciences of 15 states of Europe and Asia with the purpose of joining efforts for decision of major scientific problems and creating new partnerships between researchers.     High boundaries of the young scientists

    From basic researches to practical applications" - so the first republican conference of the young scientists on physics of the condensed environments (Wednesdays) refers to as which has opened in Tashkent. It is organized within the framework of performance of tasks of the State program "Year of youth " by a Society of physics of Uzbekistan and Department of heating physics of an Academy of sciences of the country with assistance of the Japanese agency of the international cooperation (JICA).

    Project news: Profile of potential host institutions in EECA

    The “People” is a specific Programme of the EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). The actions under the “People” Programme focus on mobility of researchers towards development of their scientific experience and career. The Programme is open to all domains of scientific and technological research and contains schemes for international mobility with Third Countries which are neither EU Member States (MS) nor Associated to FP7 Countries (AC). To promote a submission of joint proposals of EECA research organisations and European researchers the filled Questionnaires are posted here.

    Virtual Silk Road project’s council meets in Tashkent

    The regular meeting of the council of the NATO’s Virtual Silk Road project took place on 1st October 2008 in Tashkent. The event has been organized by the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and NATO Science Committee. Specialists, experts and scholars from Uzbekistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Britain, the Netherlands, Belarus, Norway, Hungary, Turkey and Armenia took part in the session. Uzbekistan telecommunications and information technologies were being intensively introduced in all spheres.
