A Center for the development of biotechnologies and pilot production of biological products was opened in the Institute of Microbiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 19 January 2010.

Thanks to the public support, a modern biotechnological production has been created based on domestic technologies. Currently, biopreservatives, biofertilizers, feed additives, biological means of plants protection, etc. are being produced in the Center. Its planned annual capacity is 30 tons.

The Center will help to reduce the country’s heavy import dependence on the vitally important biotechnological products, e.g glucose oxydase used a basic component for sensors in express analysis of glucose for patients with diabetes.

According to Emiliya Kolomiyets, Director of the Institute of Microbiology, Belarusian market of biological products is steadily increasing. Recently, at lot had been made in the country to stimulate development of biotechnologies. In 2010, five more biotechnology companies and almost ten new productions will be set up in Belarus.
