    SeaDataNet: Pan-European infrastructure for ocean and marine data management

    The overall objective of the SeaDataNet project is the upgrade the present SeaDataNet infrastructure into an operationally robust and state-of-the-art Pan-European infrastructure for providing up-to-date and high quality access to ocean and marine metadata, data and data products originating from data acquisition activities by all engaged coastal states, by setting, adopting and promoting common data management standards and by realising technical and semantic interoperability with other relevant data management systems and initiatives on behalf of science, environmental management, policy making, and economy.

    Idealist2014 – Trans-national cooperation among ICT NCPs

    The main objective of Idealist2014 is reinforcing the network of National Contact Points (NCP) for ICT under FP7, by promoting further trans-national cooperation within this network. This cooperation will not be reduced to only ICT NCPs but also a degree of collaboration and networking with similar networks in parallel themes (Security, SSH, ENV, Transport, Energy, Health,etc) especially in the context of joint/coordinated or PPP calls will be covered.

    Climate change and biodiversity patterns in the Mid-Paleozoic (Early Devonian to Early Carboniferous) UNESCO/ IGCP 596

    The primary goal of the project is to assess the intensity of climate change and biodiversity response of the Mid Paleozoic in marine and terrestrial sequences. MPBCC is a project within the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) Geoscience in the service of society. The IGCP is a cooperative enterprise of UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and has been stimulating comparative studies in the Earth Sciences since 1972.

    enviroGRIDS - Building Capacity for a Black Sea Catchment Observation and Assessment System supporting Sustainable Development

    The Black Sea Catchment is internationally known as one of ecologically unsustainable development and inadequate resource management, which has led to severe environmental, social and economic problems. The EnviroGRIDS project addresses these issues by bringing several emerging information technologies that are revolutionizing the way we are able to observe our planet. The Group on Earth Observation Systems of Systems (GEOSS) is building a data-driven view of our planet that feeds into models and scenarios to explore our past, present and future.

  • | Project of the Month - August 2011

    SOLO - Epidemiological Studies of Exposed Southern Urals Populations

    SOLO is a four year integrated, multi-disciplinary project to investigate the risks of radiation exposure. It involves dosimetrists, operational health physicists, statisticians and epidemiologists from nine institutions in the EU, Russian Federation and the USA. The project will study the health of two key radiation exposed populations from the Southern Urals of the Russian Federation. The aim is to derive better estimates of the risks of cancer and some non-cancer diseases from long term exposure to ionising radiation.

    The EU-EECA ICT cluster’s Help-Desk – a tool to support participation in the ICT theme of FP7

    The EECA ICT cluster is an initiative supported by the European Commission under the ICT Theme area of FP7. It unites 3 complementary support actions (ISTOK-SOYUZ, SCUBE-ICT and EXTEND) that share common objectives and deploy within 2009-2011 a wide range of activities in the EECA aiming to increase awareness on EU-funded research activities, improve visibility of ICT R&D; organizations and specialists from EECA on the European arena and stimulate collaboration with their EU counterparts, as well as to support the policy dialogue between the EU and EECA, contributing to the setting up of joint initiatives enhancing their ICT R&D; collaboration.

    SEOCA - GEO capacity building initiative in Central Asia

    Central Asia is an important European partner facing critical environmental challenges. Possessing certain experiences and capabilities of Earth Observation (EO) data application for solving environmental, economic, societal and other problems, this region is better prepared for the uptake of GEOSS technologies than many other clusters of developing countries. The goal of SEOCA is to promote European GEO-techlogies in the region of Central Asia as a platform solution for the regional development challenges. The project intends to take a significant step towards deeper integration of organisations from Central Asia into the activities of GEO.

  • | Project of the Month - May 2011

    LCOIR-UA: Low-Carbon Opportunities for Industrial Regions of Ukraine

    Ukraine is the world 7th country in CO2 emissions, and more than 70% of these emissions come from the energy sector, mainly using the local coal. Other industries such as metallurgy, coal mining and chemical productions are also huge consumers of coal-based energy. An additional factor are the thermal power plants, whose old equipment was not adapted to less emitting technologies – clean coal technologies (CCT) and carbon capture and storage technologies (CCS). In view of this, the project aims at increasing awareness on these challenges, thus preparing the ground for the implementation of CCT and CCS technologies in Eastern Ukraine.

    MOLD-ERA - Preparation for Moldova's integration into the European Research Area and into the Community R&D; Framework Programs on the basis of scientific excellence

    MOLD-ERA is a Coordination and Support Action funded by the EU under FP7 for 30 months from 1st November 2010. It brings together partners from the UK, Germany, Israel and Republic of Moldova, being the first project to be coordinated by Republic of Moldova in the framework of the ERA-WIDE activity.

    AERO-UKRAINE: "Stimulating Ukraine - EU Aeronautics Research Co-operation"

    Ukraine has a proud heritage in aeronautics dating from the Soviet era. It is one of the few countries in the world to have research, engineering and production capabilities across a wide range of aeronautics technologies. Despite these strengths, the participation of Ukrainian aeronautics actors in the EC’s past framework programmes has been low. Consequently, the main aim of AERO-UKRAINE is to facilitate research co-operation between aeronautics actors from the EU and Ukraine.

    SEMIDEC: "Stimulating Semiconductor Design Cooperation between Europe and Russia"

    SEMIDEC is an ambitious Support Action project aimed at stimulating cooperation in the design of semiconductor components and electronic based miniaturised systems between Europe and Russia, in order to support Europe’s leading position in integrated circuit product innovation. Consequently, SEMIDEC aims to develop cooperation in semiconductor design methods and tools that are relevant to the research priorities identified in the FP7 ICT Work Programme 2009 and ENIAC Strategic Research Agenda 2007.

    Bioliquids-CHP: Engine and turbine combustion for combined heat and power production

    The aim of the Bioliquids-CHP project is to adapt a diesel engine and a micro gas turbine to enable the combustion of various bio-liquids including pyrolysis oils and blends. The project also aims at upgrading such oils to make them easier to use in engines and at developing catalysts and a system for NOx removal from diesel engine exhaust gases.

    EU-RU.NET - Linking R&D; Strategies, Foresight and Stimulation of EU-Russia Cooperation in Nanoelectronics Technology

    Leading research centres of Belgium (IMEC), France (CEA), Germany (Fraunhofer Society), and Italy (CNR) along with universities and research centres in Moscow (Lomonosov State University and MIKRON JSC), St Petersburg (Academic University Nanotechnology Research Education Centre RAS and the Electrotechnical University ETU), and RAS institutes in Novosibirsk and Ulan-Ude, have created within this FP7 Coordination and Support Action Project networks aiming at strengthening the EU-Russia cooperation in Nanoelectronics.

    ENRI-East – Interplay of European, National and Regional Identities

    The ENRI-East Project – "Interplay of European, National and Regional Identities: Nations between States along the New Eastern Borders of the European Union" is an FP7-SSH collaborative research project, funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (2008-2011). This international research project is dedicated to the study of socio-ethnic identities in Eastern European countries. By and large, this is a pilot scientific effort: no study like that has been ever done before in terms of its geographical coverage, thematic scope as well as variety of research tools and methods.

  • | Project of the Month - September 2010

    ACQWA

    The goal of the ACQWA project (Assessing Climate impacts on the Quality and the quantity of WAter) is to quantify how water resources in vulnerable mountain regions, particularly those where snow and ice is a major control on runoff, may change in a warming climate. The project further aims to assess how shifts in water amount and seasonality may affect key economic actors such as agriculture, energy, tourism or mining, and how potential rivalries between these actors may be alleviated through improved water governance.

The project aims to strengthen their policy dialogue with the EU and to promote science an technology cooperation between the EU and the target regions. The project also benefits from the already ongoing IncoNet EECA project, expanding its activities with a specific focus on CA/SC and Moldova.

    EECAlink - Promotion and facilitation of international cooperation with Eastern European and Central Asian Countries

    The EECAlink is a coordination action aimed at identification of common research priorities of the European Union and Eastern European and Central Asian countries (EECA) and strengthening collaboration among them. The project is financed by the Seventh Framework Programme (contract n°223359) under the Health priority theme. The coordinator is Prof. Stanislav Stipek from the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague. In total, the project unites 17 partners from 12 countries – Armenia, Belarus, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

    HITT-CIS Health in Times of Transition

    The HITT-CIS Project – "Health in Times of Transition: Trends in Population Health and Health Policies in CIS Countries" is an FP7-Health collaborative research project, funded by EU-FP7 Programme (2009-2013). This is an international research project that will study, in detail, trends in population health and health policies in 10 countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia).

    D4S - Dialogue on Science for Sustainability

    Internationally coordinated research agendas are a must when it comes to finding sustainable solutions to the global challenges of our time. For this reason, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched a series of dialogues with key emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Bilateral events are being held under the title “Sustainable Solutions – Science for Sustainability” (D4S).     CAREN

    From an ancient trade route to a virtual highway: Co-founded by the Europe Aid Cooperation Office (AIDCO) for the period from 2009 to 2011, the CAREN project aims to establish a high-capacity, yet cost-effective, regional data-communications network for research and education in Central Asia. It sets out to provide broadband to about one million researchers, students and faculty at over 200 universities and research institutions in the countries dotted along the old Silk Road.

Official start was February 1, 2008. Declared aim of NET4SOCIETY: build a powerful network of best-informed National Contact Points for the Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities to offer best services to the SSH research community.     Project „LinKAGE“– Scientific Links between Kazakhstan and Germany– Kazakhstan is on the “Path to Europe”

    After the meetings with the Kazakh leading scientists in November 2008 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the research and consulting group innowise GmbH has started the match-making with the German research institutions for joint projects in national and in European research programs. Fields of cooperation include biotechnology, medicine, geo-technology, chemistry, catalysis research and nanotechnology. The project “LinKAGE” intends to establish and to extend scientific links between German and Kazakh research institutions and is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.

    Black Sea Interconnection

    Black Sea Interconnection (BSI) aims at building an international network infrastructure among research and education networks in the South Caucasus region and connecting it to the pan-European research network. The network will interconnect Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia and also provide the connectivity for these countries to GÉANT2. The BSI project intends to introduce new technologies and services to the Information Society in those countries and be an important leap towards the integration of those countries scientific potential with the European Research Area.

    RUSERA-EXE

    BONUS

    BONUS ERA-NET is a project with a full name BONUS for the Baltic Sea Science - Network of Funding Agencies. It is funded by the EU 6th Framework Programme during 2003 - 2008. It has the form of a consortium with 14 partners from all nine Baltic Sea countries. The project's aim is to build up a network of funding agencies and create conditions for a Joint Baltic Sea Research Programme.

    SSA INCOMAT

    The field of biomaterials for biomedical applications has recently developed a major growth potential as demand for cardiovascular, orthopaedic, dental and other implant devices is tremendously increasing worldwide. Ageing of the European and worldwide populations will be a crucial challenge for the health-care providing sector in the 21st century. The INCOMAT endeavor was expecially motivated by problems concerning research/technology resources and capabilities in the Third Countries (Western Balkan or WBS and Newly Independent States or NIS) which have, to date, developed only regional networks.
