| Project of the Month - December 2009
The main objective of the CEUBIOM (Classification of European Biomass Potential for Bioenergy Using Terrestrial and Earth Observations) project is to develop a common methodology for gathering information on biomass potential using terrestrial and earth observations. This objective will be achieved by the implementation of a systematic assessment work plan and will result in the establishment of a harmonised approach and an e-training tool for dissemination.
Based on the identified user requirements and the methods available for combining Earth Observation and terrestrial inventory data, a concept for a harmonized approach for biomass assessment will be developed. The concept will utilize already existing inventory data from national and regional inventories as well as that of the potential synergies between information that can be derived from Earth Observation data and the already existing inventory data collected in the field. The concept will also bear in mind the capacities of airborne remote sensing with particular respect to laserscanning and photogrammetry based methods.
The e-training environment is an important tool for reaching the essential European harmonisation, whereas a Stakeholder Platform will facilitate access to reliable and common datasets on biomass potential and as such it will offer a more efficient use of the available European biomass feedstock.
The CEUBIOM project is funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programme 7 within the 'Energy Thematic Area' and contributes to 'Harmonisation of biomass resource assessment' activities.
