„LinKAGE“ – Scientific Links between Kazakhstan and Germany“ – Successful discussions with leading Kazakh scientists

From the 16. November to 22. November 2008 the research and consulting group innowise GmbH visited Almaty, Kazakhstan, in order to meet leading scientists and to expand scientific links between German and Kazakh research institutions.

Within the project "LinKAGE" innowise screened the research landscape in Kazakhstan and conducted individual meetings with Kazakh researchers about concrete project ideas and cooperation wishes. On this basis, innowise is presently contacting German research institutions in order to find matching partners for joint projects in national and in European research programs. Possible fields of cooperation include bio-technology, medicine, geo-technology, chemistry, catalysis research and nanotechnology.

The dynamic growth of Kazakhstan is primarily based on natural resources exports of oil, gas, minerals and metals. Within the national strategy "Path to Europe" Kazakh government invests not only in political and legal infrastructure, but increasingly also in research and development of innovative technologies. Scientific structures have been modernized and equipped with financially strong investment funds. Kazakh researchers already cooperate with international partners from the United States and Asia and with some European countries, such as Great Britain or Denmark. However, only few contacts to the German research organizations exist so far, although Kazakh researchers demonstrate great interest in experience exchange and in conducting joint research projects with German research institutions.

„Kazakhstan undergoes currently some major changes. The government’s strategy is to decrease Kazakhstan’s dependence on the export of natural resources by developing innovative and applied technologies. Therefore the focus is laid on science again. For German researchers, that means interesting research projects and committed partners in Kazakhstan "- says Markus Schroll, CEO of innowise GmbH.

Interested German researchers are welcome to contact innowise GmbH and also suggest cooperation partners or project ideas. In Kazakhstan the project is coordinated by an excellently interconnected country partner, the National Center of Scientific and Technology Information of Kazakhstan. The project "LinKAGE" is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.
