Upcoming project to research rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated soils

Radioactive contamination of a considerable amount of agricultural lands in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and some European countries is the result of the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The total area of agricultural lands with contamination density of 137Cs more than 1 Ci/km2 makes 1351,2 thousand ha, with contamination density of 90Sr more than 0,15 Ci/km2 makes 555,1 thousand ha in Belarus. More than 1,8 million ha of agricultural lands (about 20% of their total area) have been exposed radioactive contamination with density above 37 Bq/km2. From them 265,0 thousand ha with contamination density of 137Cs above 1480 Bq/km2, 90Sr above 111 Bq/km2 have been excluded from agricultural use.

This is the backdrop of the upoming project "Production of amendments on the basis of natural raw material and industrial waste and their application for rehabilitation of soils contaminated by radionuclides". Design objective is the preparation and production of a pilot lot of amendments on the basis of natural raw material and industrial waste for the carrying out of field experiments on rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated soils in Belarus with use of the amendments. Realization of the given project allows to create a scientific basis for remediation of contaminated soils and economic revival of contaminated territories.

Considering scales of contamination of agricultural soils in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine special importance get economic aspects of the developed technologies and possibility of their application. The basic advantage of offered technology of rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated soils in Belarus and Russia is use for rehabilitation amendments on basis of natural raw material (sapropel) and industrial waste (hydrolyzed lignin, clay-salt slimes, phosphogypsum), as sorbent of of 137Cs and 90Sr, which are effective, have fair price and are technically easy applicable.

At carrying out of the project it is supposed to fulfill the following main tasks:

  1. Investigation of physico-chemical, agrochemical and sorption properties of natural raw material for pilot lot of amendment production;
  2. Production and testing of pilot lot of amendments:
  3. Carrying out of vegetation experiments with use of amendments and estimation of their efficiency application;
  4. Carrying out of field experiments with use of amendments on the soils contaminated by radionuclides in Belarus and estimation of their efficiency application;
  5. Development specification and technical documentations for production of pilot lot of amendments.

As a result of performance of the project the science-based data on doses and terms of insertion of the developed amendments in the soils contaminated by radionuclides 137Cs and 90Sr, the new data on increase of sorption properties of soils concerning radiocaesium and radiostrontium by insertion of amendments into radioactive contaminated soil (in field conditions), and efficiency of their application on radioactive contaminated soils depending on key soil characteristics will be obtained.

Advantages of the offered technology of amendment production will be put the technological decisions, which are a subject of the invention and determines high commercial potential of the given project. Setting up of amendment production and perspective use of multi-tonnage industrial waste (hydrolyzed lignin, clay-salt slimes, phosphogypsum) will be the important practical results of the project. In a basis of the offered technology of amendment production will be put the technological decisions , which are a subject of the invention and determines high commercial potential of the given project. For amendment production the innovative approach will be used which consist in application of modern methods and technologies on manufacturing of given products, which correspond to national and International requirements and standards.

Realization of the given project will allow to create the innovation technology of amendments production on the basis of natural raw material and industrial wastes for a solving of a problem of soil rehabilitation in Belarus and Russia. Realization of the project will allow to provide returning in an agricultural rotation of radioactive contaminated soils, which are temporarily deduced from using in Belarus and will promote economic activities restoration in the radioactive contaminated zone.
