    The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) organised a podium discussion titled: 'Agricultural Investments in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan – “Land Grabbing” or Development Opportunity?     Workshop review: Improving S&T Indicators in Central Asia

    Evidence policy making in science, technology and innovation is an important matter that finds its response in STI strategies developed and programmes implemented. Key-indicators for assessment of STI are widely used to set targets in national strategies but advanced knowledge about data production guidelines, processing standards for statistical data and the usability are fields widely neglected in Central Asian countries.

    Kazakhstan to spend $200M in 2011 developing science sector

    According to Kazakh news agency Kazinform.com the the vice-minister of education and science, Aidar Zhakupov, announced that Kazakhstan will spend $203.4 million to develop its science sector in 2011.

    New FP7 NCP structure in Kazakhstan

    The Ministry of the Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan is implementing a "Coordination Board on cooperation with the European Union Framework Programmes on research, technology development and innovation”. The new board is an advisory and deliberative body under the Ministry of Education and Science. In addition 15 new NCPs have been appointed.

    III Astana Economic Forum took place in the Palace of Independence in the beginning of July

    The forum was attended by over 2000 representatives of business and political areas from more than fifty countries. For the first time this year V Innovation Congress became a part of the Forum’s program, and the main theme there was the "The model of efficient and well functioning national innovation system is the basis of economic recovery in post-crisis period."

    DCI – FP7 workshop in Central Asia boosted the dialogue and synergy between two EU programs

    The Regional Workshop “S&T systems in Central Asia to economic development, growth and prosperity and the synergies with the European Union Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI)” took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 25-26 March 2010. The workshop was organised by the “IncoNET EECA – International Network on S&T cooperation for Eastern European and Central Asian countries” project financed by the Seventh Framework program of the EU on S&T development (FP7) with a primary interest to have more scientists from CA to take part in the programs.

    Conference: “Perspective directions of alternative energetics and energy-recourses saving technologies” in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, 27-28 May 2010

    An international scientific-practical conference on the “Perspective directions of alternative energetics and energy-recourses saving technologies” will be held from May 27-28, 2010 at the M.Auezov South-Kazakhstan State University in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. It adresses teaching staff, young scientists of HEIs and Scientific Research Institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Commonwealth of Independent States, as well as from Germany, Great Britain, Japan and other countries who have meaningful results of scientific researches on the theme of the Conference. The working languages of the Conference are Kazakh, Russian and English.

    President Nursultan Nazarbayev visited the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi, celebrating the 75th anniversary of KazNU. The university is considered to be the leading university of Kazakhstan. KazNU is the first winner of the Presidential award «For achievements in the field of quality».

    New Innovation Strategy of the Republic of Kazakhstan on enforcement of industrial and innovative development of the country

    By December 01, 2009, the government of Kazakhstan has to develop a strategy of enforced industrial and innovative development of the country until 2014 based upon the sector plans of the industrialization map and the layout of the production facilities. This strategy is supposed to become one of the main documents correlated with all strategic plans of the state.

    Science Fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan

    The Science Fund was set up by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan in November 2006 and plays one of the key roles in implementing the State program on science development in the country for the period of 2007-2012. Main activity of the Fund is to support potentially effective R&D companies of the international level with high practical and applied potential.

    Regional Workshop Central Asia on S&T development and the FP7 "Development Cooperation Instrument" (DCI)

    S&T policy should be embedded into other policies. In particular there is a need to ensure coherence of implementation instruments. The Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI) is a major tool of the EU to promote coherence amongst international development activities. The workshop in Almaty aims to develop recommendations on how regional S&T strategies can be aligned with national as well as with EU policies and instruments, enabling an optimum exploitation of synergies.

    Presidents of EurAsEC (Eurasian Economic Community) member states decided to create International Center of High Technologies

    At the last meeting of the heads of EurAsEC member states in Moscow on 4 February it was decided to create International Center of High Technologies. According to the experts, the activities of the future Center should be aimed at joint development and realization of S&T programs and innovative projects that has to support creation of the EurAsEC common research area and attract a wide range of scientists and experts.

    International Association of Academies of Sciences is the international non-governmental organization created in 1993 in Kiev by representatives of the national academies of sciences of 15 states of Europe and Asia with the purpose of joining efforts for decision of major scientific problems and creating new partnerships between researchers.     Virtual Silk Road project’s council meets in Tashkent

    The regular meeting of the council of the NATO’s Virtual Silk Road project took place on 1st October 2008 in Tashkent. The event has been organized by the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and NATO Science Committee. Specialists, experts and scholars from Uzbekistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Britain, the Netherlands, Belarus, Norway, Hungary, Turkey and Armenia took part in the session. Uzbekistan telecommunications and information technologies were being intensively introduced in all spheres.
