    Call for collaborative research projects in maritime technologies

    MARTEC II has opened a transnational call for collaborative research projects in different areas of maritime technologies (deadline: 30.04.2012).  This call is initiated by funding organisations from twelve different European partner countries of the ERA-NET MARTEC consortium. Eligible partner countries are Belarus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the UK.

    Statistical Book 'Science and Innovation Activity in the Republic of Belarus, 2011'

    The statistical book issued by the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus presents information on main indicators of scientific and innovation activities the Republic of Belarus in 2005-2010.     New Belarusian-Lithuanian cooperation project started

    An international project to promote cooperation between Lithuania and Belarus in innovations has been launched in the Belarusian city of Grodno, near the western border of the country. The first seminar was held at Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno.

    Agreement between Belarus and Italy on cooperation in science and technology signed

    Belarus and Italy have signed an inter-governmental agreement on cooperation in science and technology. Upon the results of bi-lateral meeting in June 2011 in Trieste, Italy during the CEI ministerial meeting, the heads of the ministries of external affairs of Belarus and Italy Mr Sergey Martunov and Mr Franko Frattini finalized negotiations on this document which lasted for quite long time.

    Scientists from Belarus grow first synthetic red emerald

    Scientists at the Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus have for the first time grown a synthetic emerald of red colour, according to the Head of the Physics of High Conductivity Materials Laboratory, Vladimir Merkulov. In nature this gem is very rare, being only mined in the USA. According to experts natural emeralds will vanish sooner than - for instance - crude oil.

    Belarus: new head of Belarus Academy of Sciences and new Minister of Education appointed

    On 29 December 2010 Prof. Anatoly Rusetsky was appointed a Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The previous leader of the NAS, Mikhail Myasnikovich has been appointed the Prime-Minister of Belarus. On the same day Prof. Sergey Maskevich was appointed the Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus. He has replaced Prof. Alexander Radkov who was appointed the Deputy Head of the President’s Administration.

    Upcoming project to research rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated soils

    The Chernobyl accident in 1986resulted in the radioactive contamination of a considerable amount of agricultural lands in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and some European countries. An upcoming project aims at preparing and producing a pilot lot of amendments on the basis of natural raw material and industrial waste to carry out field experiments on the rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated soils in Belarus with use of the given sorbents. The realization of this project is meant to create a scientific basis for remediation of contaminated soils and economic revival of contaminated territories.

    Belarus and Lithuania will support 20 joint projects in science and technology

    In 2011-2012 Belarus and Lithuania will support 20 joint S&T projects. This was decided at the 4th meeting of the bi-lateral Commission on Cooperation in Science and Technology held in Minsk in December 2010. The projects have been selected of 34 applications submitted to the call upon the results of independent scientific evaluation carried out in the both countries.

    Presidents of Belarus and Lithuania hold talks on cooperation

    On 20 October 2010 the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė had a meeting with President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus in Minsk where they discussed regional cooperation between the two countries within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to be chaired by Lithuania next year, as well as possibilities for bilateral cooperation.

    The Law of the Republic of Belarus No. 115-З of 4 May 2010 has introduced some changes in the national legislation in science, technology and innovation activities

    The Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus №441 approves additional measures to stimulate the S&T and innovative activities

    On 7 September 2009 the President of Republic Беларусь signed the Decree № 441 "On additional measures for stimulating scientific, technical and innovation activities" initiated by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The document envisages the mechanisms of increasing remuneration for those researchers who are directly involved in R&D within the priority areas of S&T activities for the purposes of strengthening the national safety, improvement of life standards of the population and increasing the export of domestic production.

    Belarus' new innovation concept in preparation

    The State Committee for Science and Technology of Belarus (SCST) started working on a new innovation development concept of Belarus for the next five years, Chairman of the Committee Igor Voitov told reporters on 27 July.     Plan of the national expositions of Belarus abroad for 2009 have been approved

    According to this Plan, Belarus will organize in 2009 15 national exhibitions and expositions in 12 countries. They should promote domestic technologies, scientific developments, goods and services on the external markets. 3 of 15 national exhibitions will be held in Russia - in Ekaterinburg, Moscow and Krasnodar.     WIPO World patent report: Belarus occupies 4 place in number of nationals’ patent applications

    According to 2008 edition of WIPO World patent report, Belarus has improved positions in world rankings in which inventors’ activity corresponds to GDP and expenditures for R&D. Among 69 countries of the world Belarus occupies 4 place (63,91 applications) in number of nationals’ patent applications to 1 bln USD of GDP (13 in 2005, 15,36 applications). It became the world leader in number of residents’ patent applications to 1 mln R&D expenditures (12,34 applications).

    Belarusian–Venezuelan Centre for S&T Cooperation was opened

    The Office of the Joint Belarusian – Venezuelan Centre for S&T Cooperation was opened in the National Experimental University named after S. Rodriges, Caracas, Venezuela in June 2008. Belarusian Office of the Centre which is hosted by the National Technical University in Minsk carries out its activities since 9 April, 2008. The Centre assists universities, R&D organizations, innovative and industrial companies of the two countries in developing contacts in scientific, innovation and education areas, and also in creating effective mechanisms of cooperation between the two parties within the realization of joint S&T projects.
