    The fight for influence in the South Caucasus - What role for the EU?

    The EU's role in the South Caucasus – a report by the European Policy Centre

    The linked report summarises the views of Philippe Lefort, the EU’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, as well as those of Bulgarian MEP Evgeni Kirilov, who drafted a European Parliament report on the South Caucasus, and of Dennis Sammut, executive director of the London Information Network on Conflicts and State-Building. The European Policy Centre (EPC) is an independent, not-for-profit think tank. Members of the EPC comprise companies, professional and business federations, trade unions, diplomatic missions, regional and local bodies, as well as NGOs.

    New EU project strengthens role of Uzbek & Azerbaijan universities in transfer of innovations into enterprise

    The overall objective of the TEMPUS-project „Enhancement of role of universities in transfer of innovations into enterprise“ (short: "UnIvEnt") is the introduction of research and application centres in Uzbek and Azerbaijan universities. This will improve the transfer of innovation and new technologies into industrial product developments. The project also aims to create an accessible information database of innovations at universities and improve the practice orientation of higher education.

    UNESCO to assist Azerbaijan in designing ‘road map’ for a national STI strategy

    The President of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, Mahmud Karimov, and the Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, Gretchen Kalonji, are due to sign an agreement on 24 November establishing a project through which UNESCO will assist the Government of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in designing a ‘road map’ for the formulation of the Azerbaijan Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy.

    A web-portal of the International Association of Academies of Sciences is opened

    International Association of Academies of Sciences is the international non-governmental organization created in 1993 in Kiev by representatives of the national academies of sciences of 15 states of Europe and Asia with the purpose of joining efforts for decision of major scientific problems and creating new partnerships between researchers. Now its web-portal is available at www.iaas.de

    Joint calls for 2009

    By 1 November 2008, Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research has launched the joint calls for 2009 with United Institute of Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia, S&T Foundation of Mongolia, Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technologies, and also with the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

    Virtual Silk Road project’s council meets in Tashkent

    The regular meeting of the council of the NATO’s Virtual Silk Road project took place on 1st October 2008 in Tashkent. The event has been organized by the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and NATO Science Committee. Specialists, experts and scholars from Uzbekistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Britain, the Netherlands, Belarus, Norway, Hungary, Turkey and Armenia took part in the session. Uzbekistan telecommunications and information technologies were being intensively introduced in all spheres.
